*Other tasty variations: sub whiskey for a mezcal or an amber rum!

There are many ways we can escape into another land without actually going anywhere. We can dive into tv shows, films, or books, and pretend we’re walking among the characters in their world. We can open every social media door and live vicariously through our friends, but quite possibly–and maybe more commonly, strangers we casually stalk. And we can escape into taste. Escape into the feelings, memories, and destinations, that taste can lead us to.

I think during this time, we’re all feeling a little bit of everything. But feelings of warmth, connection, and a sense of breaking free, are definitely near the surface. So that’s what this cocktail is all about. I wanted to create something that would take me somewhere. Somewhere, where I feel like everything’s going okay.

With this Backyard Getaway, I put together a drink that made my heart smile and gave me positive, jazzy vibes that brightened up my day. I wanted to play around with twisting the bold profile of whiskey, and gave it some uplifting fruity and almond elements. Though, not wanting it to be too warm and sweet, I balanced it out with lime and a hint of Fernet. With that, I have this magical delight to enjoy in the sunshine and in the comfort of my home. Simply leaning back in my chair, closing my eyes to feel the sun, with good jams playing in the background, and imbibing with this treat–I’m in another place full of adventure. And you’re there too.

*And though the recipe here is shown with whiskey, I tried it with subbing in mezcal and also again with an amber rum. Both options are oh-so tasty, and I’d high recommend trying those out–especially if you’re not a huge whiskey fan. Cheers, imbibers!
